Ongoing projects
In Northern Savonia Region machine and energy technology is the most important industry branch from economic point of view. The development of technology and the involvement of SME’s to take part in global supply network needs a strong RDI center of excellence. The development needs in energy sector in Northern Savonia Region have already been identified in the preliminary project. As a result of the study, a number of technical development needs were identified. In addition, it emerged that the operating model and operating methods between RDI- Center and industrial companies in the region still requires further development.
The aim of this project is to develop and establish Energy Technology RDI Ecosystem in Northern Savonia Region with the capacity and ability to test and develop new innovations in the energy sector (at levels TRL1-9), The Energy Technology RDI environment forms one closely co-operative entity capable to fulfill the needs of energy companies for product development and testing services. In order to achieve this goal, the project brings together energy research and product development organizations in Northern Savonia.
Within the project, a cluster management model will be developed in collaboration with all stakeholders, also research sector specific R&D Groups will be formed and organized when the project starts. The model will be tested by realized RDI cases during the project.
The project focus on
- development of the operating model and its piloting
- internationalization of the ecosystem
- roadmaps for the promotion of new technologies
The following research sector specific RDI groups are formed (based on a preliminary study) for
- promotion of the circular economy
- corrosion testing of boiler metals
- development and accreditation of measuring devices for energy sector
- the development of district heating systems
- research of combustion processes and emission reduction
- the development of battery technology
This project is supported by another investment project where all the necessary research equipment and facilities for piloting, testing and measuring purposes will by acquired.

Utilization of renewable biomasses and waste fuels in energy production boilers has been growing continuously in the
recent years. However, moving into high biofuel contents and the use of low-grade biomasses and waste fuels cause
challenges related to fouling, combustion process operation, ash disposal and emissions at the boiler plants.
This project utilizes the versatile experimental, measurement and analysis capabilities of Savonia University of Applied Sciences (Savonia) and University of Eastern Finland (UEF) for understanding the ash and emission related problems of biomass and waste combustion plants, and develops solutions for these problems.
Business Partners in this project are Andritz, Clean Steel, Riikinvoima, Stora Enso, Savon Voima ja Sumitomo SHI FW Energia.
Project duration: 1.1.2019 - 31.3.2021.

The project’s goal is to collect information and experiences about utilization of renewable energy sources in smallsites. The project’s objective is to advance the introduction and use of renewable energy in small sites in NorthernSavonia. In the project, households are investigated as energy producers and consumers of the future. Householdswill produce their own energy for consumption and work on a national level as a part of the electricity grid with flexibleuse of electricity with production and storage. The project considers especially energy storage related issues. Forenergy storage, new solutions are proposed where new electric appliances and devices of the future and theircapability to communicate with the environment (Internet of Things, IoT) are combined. Low carbon principle is realized in a significant way in the project. In the project as a demonstration, some key energy sources will be connected to the site’s energy system. Purpose is to create an application, which can manage the small sites electricity and heat consumption at different times of dayand seasons, in addition to maximizing the use of renewable sources. The output of the project aims to optimize costand profit of energy in small sites. The tools created in the project can create customized forecasts for production andconsumption at the small sites, once the site’s parameters and history data is inserted. Companies in the target group can offer new services and information to their cust

There is currently new business emerging in the Eastern Finland utilizing pyrolysis process in the production of heating oil. However, at the moment the emissions from the thermal utilization of these renewable pyrolysis oils are not known. In addition, for small scale boiler units in general, there is a great need for development of cost-efficient emission control technologies. In the North-Savonia area, there are unique possibilities to develop solutions for these issues via cooperation between University of Eastern Finland (UEF), Savonia University of Applied Sciences (Savonia) and companies, as they possess state-of-the-art facilities for experimental research on combustion processes and
emission formation as well as expertise in the field.
The aims of this project are to produce knowledge and skills, needed by the companies, regarding the utilization of renewable pyrolysis oils in energy production. These include issues such as fuel usability, flue gas emissions, and emission control solutions. In addition, the project aims to strengthen the research and development (R&D) capabilities of UEF and Savonia related to combustion processes. This is done by increasing collaboration, developing joint activities, increasing international reputation, and developing competencies to offer R&D services.

The objective of the project is to find and develop new, financially profitable applications for the use of recycled
material. The processed materials may include different secondary flows of fibres, minerals or plastics in industry, or
similar material that has already been categorised as waste, such as construction or municipal waste. The project
enables the significant reduction of carbon footprints.
The project aims to create an operating model which guides corporate actors in brainstorming new applications based
on recycled materials available, after which prototypes are created of the best ideas. The brainstorming process must
be as interactive as possible, and the objective of the project is to hold several consecutive idea-to-prototype sessions
where feedback from the previous round is used as input in the next round. Prototypes can be produced by
agglomeration, extrusion and moulding.
By working independently as well as interacting with other companies, businesses are better able to understand their
possibilities to utilise secondary flows from production and identify new raw material sources. Businesses generate
ideas for new products and the use of new production methods. Businesses also obtain innovation tools and models to
improve their daily operations.
